Fly fishing using streamers is a method often ignored or even overlooked by anglers and fishermen, especially those who fish for trout. What are streamers by the way? It is a loose definition for food other than the ordinary insects. Examples are crustaceans, leeches and crayfish. However, as the sport become more known as trout fly fishing, we always think first of using insects. Still it should be known that the large fish eat small fish as well.

In many rivers, it is always sure that there will always be fry to be eaten by the large fish. They are especially present during the spring up to the end of fall, however, they are present the whole year around.

Even if fry are absent, there are other streamers such as minnows and smelt. And if there are no minnow in the waters that you fish, do you know that trout are cannibal somewhat? Meaning where there is large trout, there must also be small trout.

Besides fly fishing streamers being possible the whole year around, another advantage of these fishing methods are that you tend to have a more bountiful catch. Understand the fish are good in conserving their energy. They will never attempt to catch food if the process will cost them more energy than the energy that they will get from consuming such food.

This is the reason why in the cold season, you have to literally dangle the food in front of them for the fish to take it. A big trout for instance will not try to work hard for food and rise up from its hole just to pursue, all because they are saving energy. However, when it comes to minnows, this is a streamer worth not turning down as it is considered a great deal of energy to be consumed for little work done.
