Christmas time means wintertime and the Yuletide Season is a cold season. And so, anglers and fly fishers have to contend with the wintry climate – and just do with whatever the cold weather offers, and enjoy some winter fly fishing.

Indeed, it is given that winter is not the most conducive time for some fly fishing action. Instead of venturing out into the icy river waters and hope (while in an almost desperate mood) for a good catch, many would rather go to holiday parties and get-togethers and reunions, or simply just stay at home in your room kept warm by a heater or fireplace.

Still, for the avid fly fisherman, nothing – not even the harshest of weather will stop him from pursuing his desire to go fishing. And if think you can categorize yourself under this type of angler, it’s best to be prepared when going forth with a winter fly fishing adventure.

You must have not only the best but also the complete set of equipment with fishing, such as the rod and hooks. It would be better if you bring along extras of your fishing equipments.

And also, remember that the harsh weather not only affects your concentration in fishing but can also cause you to become sick with the usual winter illness such as the cold and flu. Hence, protect yourself with warm thick fishing attire such as rubber coats and wading pants and boots. Enjoy what the sport of fly fishing has to offer even during this winter season.

Merry Christmas and all the best in your fly fishing!

It is Christmas once again, a time for giving and receiving and a perfect time for you to give your fly fishing buddies some great fishing presents this Yuletide season. However, you might be a loss on what to be the perfect gift for someone, unless of course you will ask the person what fishing item he wants to receive.

Fly fishing presents for the person enthusiastic in the sport will certainly send him to the heavens in happiness, much like the joy a small boy will experience when he receives a brand new bike. But there are many great choices which you might have to pick from so it definitely is not easy to assign the right fishing gift for every angler friends you know.

In my case, top of my list of great fly fishing presents is the fly fishing rod. The ultimate gift if you have the money to spend for a friend this Holiday Season. Although the problem with rods is that you probably have to give out the excellent quality rods, since every angler you know might already own best one for himself. He definitely will not part with his old rod if what you will give as gift is an inferior one. Of course, it’s the thought that counts and your gesture will very much be appreciated, but then you don’t want your gift to be forever kept in your friend’s closet do you?

Fly fishing accessories is definitely a treat for anglers. Many own only the basics – the rod, reels and lines – and don’t spend much for accessories. If you have a fisher friend who might need sunglasses, or an extra pair of wading pants, landing net, or even a headlamp, then do not hesitate to give them this type of fly fishing items for presents.

If you do have a limited budget, you might want to give away inexpensive fly boxes of wood or aluminum materials. They would be a delight because of their use mainly for keeping safely our flies and lures (Do not forget to dry away first your flies before tucking them away okay?).

Fishing items are definitely cool gifts you can give this Yuletide season. Whether the person who will receive is a veteran angler or a newbie in the sport, a nice shiny graphite or fiberglass rod, or even a simple fly tying kit will be appreciated.

Anglers and fishers who love crab fishing should head right away to Alaska for its Dungeness crabs which are abundant in the state at any time of the year. This type of crab differs from the king crabs in size and shape of their bodies. Dungeness have disproportionate body (legs are small in relation to the bodies). They can be as large as half a foot wide and normally weighs 2 pounds or almost a kilo. Male crabs are much larger than the female.

In the state of Alaska, there are crab fishing regulations that need to be followed so that no complications will occur. And definitely, not all the crabs that are fished and caught can be had; the crab has to be mature and has a size of at least half a foot, otherwise you can’t harvest any crabs.

Caution is needed when trying to land crabs; be careful especially when handling these delicious crustaceans as they have really powerful pincers. Any strike from the crab with its pincers will cause painful injury to the angler, and more often than not, carelessness will make you contend with ugly skin marks and even scars.

What should you use for crab fishing? First of all, there are the ring nets, diving wears especially for this type of angling. And of course you will also need baits for fishing these crustaceans. Some of the more common baits are carcass of fish, salmon, herring, salmon and cod carcasses. These are very effective baits for crab fishing, and will help you in easily catching and landing the best Alaskan crabs there is.

If you want to catch and land a gargantuan trophy fish of a largemouth bass, you might want to employ the jig fishing method, which is a very productive means of catching this type of species.

What exactly is jig fishing? This is a kind of fishing that uses jig lure – this consists of lead sinker with an attached hook covered by soft materials such as silicone that usually attract or lure fish. Jigs are molded in the form of a particular food that your choice of fish eats such as grub, insects and small fish. If spinner baits do horizontal motion on the waters, jigs create vertical, jerking movements.

When choosing the jig fishing method, one important thing to remember is the bass feeding habit, which varies on the kind of season you intend to fish. For example, if you are going to jig fish during the winter season, the fish are somewhat inactive, making them more difficult to catch.

Likewise, expect that the live baits that the bass feed on will also be found in the deep waters. Taking this into consideration, it is imperative that your jig closely resemble the food that the bass eat. If the food of the bass are small (perhaps because of the winter season), make sure that the jig matches the food’s size, shape and color.

Always see to it that the jig blends well with the live food. If they are found near the water surface, the jig must be positioned around this area. If they are much deeper down the waters, then you have to make your jig heavier for it to be located with the live food.

One exciting place any angler or fly fisherman can enjoy their fly fishing is on a lake. It can be the lake on your locality where you usually fish, or you can try and go out-of-state and travel to those larger, resort-like lakes for some special fly fishing adventure.

Indeed, while some love to fish on the gushing stream and river waters, there are others who love the tranquil nature of the lake. Its seeming quietness makes lake fly fishing simpler, and because of this many anglers tend to turn their fishing session into a more productive one.

Lots of people just love fly fishing from the lake shore. In my case, I have no fishing boat and I have no plans of buying one if only because if its exorbitant price. But then I have tried boat fishing on a lake with friends, but still shore lake fly fishing is still the one for me. I also enjoy shore fishing because of the security of being safe on land that it affords me – I am sure this is why others feel about shore angling.

When it comes to angling techniques, while some fishermen use single hooks, others are more comfortable and prolific when utilizing group of gang hooks. They allow the fisherman to make a natural presentation of their baits, thus attracting more fish to catch.

Another effective fishing technique is to wade on the waters of the lake shore and cast lures at the lake. For those who would like to have a feeling of connection to the lake by wetting yourself with the waters, then this is the perfect technique for you.

While many anglers and fly fishermen worry about how their catch might turn out at the end of a fly fishing day, some become more concerned about how to make their next angling session safer and avoid any more fishing hook accidents.

Where there is fly fishing, and there are places where lakes and rivers are found, the scenes of fishing hook incidents are most likely to be found. I was a victim of a hurtful hook accident; it was ages ago, but I can still the hurt it caused me. The hook was really darn sharp I thought it pierced through my finger. Luckily, it just got stuck some millimeters down my skin. Yet the pain was unbearable.

Fish hook accidents unfortunately seems to be a permanent sidelight to the main attraction that is fly fishing. The main thing to remember in order to avert any possible accident from occurring is to be careful when handling fishing hooks. Remember that every type of hook warrants specific type of handling, but every time care and caution are needed to successfully use hooks solely for fishing and nothing else.

Most of the time, hooks get stuck on the fisherman’s hands and finger. However, there are also cases when they get to reach other parts of the body such as the face, legs and thighs, and even the back part.

Do not be embarrassed about being hurt or injured by fishing hooks. If the injury requires medication, it’s best to leave everything behind for treatment. However, must accidents are minor. You just need to know how to properly remove the hook from the body part where it got stuck – in the painless manner possible.

Many accidents happen during fishing season so it is imperative that every angler and fisherman is aware of the dangers that accompany fly fishing, and one of this is being stuck by hooks. Remember fishing hooks are made for, what else, but catching fish, not humans.

Fly fishing lines are very important in achieving an exciting and prolific fly fishing session. Here are a few important tips on how to care and properly work on your fishing lines.

Always keep the lines clean for the next angling session. It is imperative that you check for dirt and grime such as water algae and other vegetation that stubbornly clings to your fishing line. This way your line will maintain its excellent quality.

How do you properly clean your lines? It is best if you can get some special cleansing agent from the fly fishing store, albeit any ordinary cleanser is also fine to use for cleaning your fishing lines.

Use only a few amount of cleansing soap and mix it with water. Soak a clean cloth on the cleansing mixture and carefully but firmly rub the cloth on the line until all stubborn dirt is removed. Finally, wipe the line with cloth soaked in plain water. Before keeping your lines away, remember to dry it thoroughly.

Oftentimes, you purchase your fishing lines that are packaged only on disposable plastic so you do not have any container to place it in after use. A small inexpensive plastic case or box can be had any store; this is perfect when tucking your fly fishing line away when not in use.

Indeed, great caring for your fly fishing lines will definitely help in making your angling adventure not only an exciting one, but also prolific and rewarding.

Better believe it - night fly fishing definitely is much more difficult than if you do some angling during the daytime. The situation and kind of environment when fishing at night is entirely a level different than day fishing and so this will have to ask for a much greater amount of skill from the angler.

But why would you prefer to go night fly fishing? Some has a simple reason – they cannot fish during the day. And if you are an avid fisherman who is very busy during daytime but still wanted to go out for some fishing can do it at night.

However, many anglers and fishermen simply look forward to the excitement that they might get from night fishing if only because of the great challenges that it offers. The dark waters and fishing area in general means so much unknown is there to be expected, giving the fishermen a unique, even thrilling kind of high.

The excitement of night fly fishing can be coupled by some dangers that anglers need to be aware of. And because of this, great care and precaution is required to really enjoy a safe night fly fishing. Well, one sure way to avoid any problem and guide you in your fishing is have some night fishing lights. There are reliable ones which can be had from your local fly fishing stores or you can order from companies online.

If you are going out for some fly fishing at night, do it on water areas where you usually fish during the day for you to really be more comfortable with the waters even if the surroundings are pitch black at worst. It helps to avoid problems and minimize hitches in your evening angling session. Night fishing at familiar waters will make it much easier for you to head for the areas such as logs and water vegetation where fish might actually stay.

Fly fishing is definitely for the veteran fishermen. And even if you are a seasoned fisher, it is still recommended that you go fish with a fellow angler. And already said, fishing in the dark poses possible dangers, and if such might actually happen and you get yourself in trouble, it can really be a relief if someone else is with you to provide help and assistance.

Finally, since you do not have full control of the situation because of the darkness of the surroundings, it is advised that you make more casts that you might normally do when fishing during the day. Patience is a virtue that you need to have if you want a prolific night fly fishing. Of course, you must be ready with more body aches, especially in the arm, because of the greater amount of effort that you need to exert. Sometimes, an unyielding attitude is all what it takes to truly enjoy a fruitful fly fishing at night.

For many, salt water fly fishing is very much preferred over fresh water fly fishing. Anglers and fly fishers – whether veteran or novice – usually enjoy sailing the vast expanse of the seas as they fish. Just being in the midst of the ocean actually provides a relieving and relaxing feeling, apart from the anticipation of an exciting angling adventure.

Still, while salt water fishing can be a real joy, anglers must remember the fact that compared to fresh water fishing, engaging in salt water fly fishing presents more problems and danger. Therefore, this requires that being prepared in case any emergency or dangerous situation is a must.

It is imperative that first aid kit is available for any event of medical emergencies. You must also be in the appropriate fly fishing gear and attire, with all the necessary accessories such as sun block, dark sunglasses and wide-brimmed headgear; all these three provides skin protection against the sun.

Salt water fly fishing provides so much excitement especially if you had a prolific day, with a bountiful catch of trophy fish. But then, not only do fish for angling abound in the seas. There are also dangerous species that lurk in the depths of the ocean such as the shark, jelly fish and stingray. There are deadly sea creatures that need to be avoided.

The best way to avoid any encounter with sharks is to stay away from infested waters. And just in case you get the surprise of your life by having a shark on the end of your line, it is best to let go instead of resisting and fighting its attack.

Stings from jellyfish and stingray can be very dangerous and will put you in a life-threatening situation. When stung by any of these salt water creatures, get medical treatment as quickly as possible. They might actually look exotic, even harmless – but their sting can place your life in grave danger.

Therefore, it is best to avoid waters populated with these creatures. Ask the advice of local anglers and fishers regarding the presence of jellyfish and stingray on the waters that you intend to fly fish.

Heed these advices whenever you are salt water fly fishing and you will have a truly great and safe fishing adventure.

My first encounter with a fly fishing hook is not so pleasant – I just had the point of the hook accidentally snagging my middle finger, I given out a loud howl of pain. I gave a sigh of relief that the hook was brand new lest I might get infected with tetanus. That experience gave me a lesson about how sharp fishing hooks can be. Actually they need to be at their sharpest to fully serve their purpose, which is bait fishing.

But if I feel pain every time I accidentally snag any part of my body with fishing hook, do you know that the fish actually do not? Well, for those might have any hesitations to get into some angling because of the perceived animal cruelty that is committed with catching fish – this is good news.

It is said that the brain of fish is not developed, which makes them not feel or respond to any pain. They might react to a fly fishing hook being impaled on their jaw or mouth and try to struggle and fight relentlessly in an effort to get them free, but generally fish do not feel pain. The most that they can feel from an impaled mouth is that which is comparable to a pinch.

Hence, conscientious anglers and fishermen can continue enjoying great fly fishing with no guilt in their minds and heart. More especially if you are someone who practices catch and release process, then you are indeed doing no harm to any fish. Weekend starts again, better get ready with your fishing lines, hooks and baits for some exciting fishing sessions.
